- The first writing was a list of ways to lift the spirits of the wounded Union soldiers of the Civil War by Clara Barton. It said: "Be cheerful. Lesson sorrow and give hope. Be brave. Put aside your feelings. Don't give up."
- The second writing was a letter from George Washington to his soldiers in case died after they crossed the Delaware during the Revolutionary War so they wouldn't give up. It said: “The harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph.”
- The third writing was a slate from an old schoolhouse in 1870's Kansas. It read: "'Tis a lesson you should heed, Try, try again; If at first you don't succeed, Try, try again."
- The fourth writing was a wood sign used in a newspaper photo during the San Francisco earthquake of 1906. It read: "There is no water and still less soap. We have no city but lots of hope."
